(12/4/04) Seeyoubychance is
32nd NY-bred open 2004 SW
The assault by registered New York-breds on open
(to horses bred anywhere) stakes races in 2004
continued on Saturday, December 4 when See You
Stable's SEEYOUBYCHANCE captured Pimlico's unrestricted
black-type H. Steward Mitchell Stakes for two-year-olds,
prevailing by a neck over the 1.60-to-1 Maryland-based
stakes-winning favorite, Monster Chaser. Sent
off in the six-furlong event as the co-second
choice among six juvenile starters at 3.40-to-1
and race-ridden for the third time -- second consecutive
-- by Ryan Fogelsonger, the bay gelding broke
outward from the outside post and raced three
to four wide around the far turn in third place.
The contest's other 3.40-to-1 co-second choice,
Late Night Lover, set the pace through fractions
of 23.32 and 46.90 but drifted out entering the
stretch, and by the eighth pole Seeyoubychance
had his head in front of that rival while setting
a five-eighths fraction of 59.45. In the final
furlong, the New York-bred held off the outside
charge of Monster Chaser -- already a six-figure
earner and coming off a length and a quarter stakes
victory at Pimlico against fellow Maryland-breds
five weeks earlier -- as the favorite edged Late
Night Lover by a neck for second-place money.
Fourth choice Malibu Moonshine (4.60-to-1), who
along with Monster Chaser had beaten Seeyoubychance
in earlier encounters along the mid-Atlantic circuit
during the past late summer and early fall, finished
a half-length behind Late Night Lover. Seeyoubychance
was the second New York-bred winner on Pimlico's
Saturday card.
Seeyoubychance's first stakes outing boosted his
earnings to $75,604 and improved his record to
four wins in eight starts, which also include
two consecutive fourth-place efforts at Pimlico
during September and October. Trained by Dale
Capuano, the rapidly improving two-year-old had
debuted at Belmont in June under the ownership
of Louis Ulman and trainer Capuano, who had purchased
the New York-bred for $16,000 at Fasig-Tipton
Midlantic's 2003 September yearling sale in Timonium,
Maryland. He had won by four lengths at Charles
Town going 4 1/2 furlongs in his second outing,
by 5 1/2 at Delaware with a $40,000 claiming price
going 5 1/2 furlongs, and by a length and a quarter
at Pimlico in a six-furlong allowance optional
claiming contest on October 24. In preparation
for the H. Steward Mitchell Stakes, trainer Capuano
had given the gelding consecutive half-mile "bullet"
workouts at Pimlico, drilling him in 47 3/5 on
November 21 and in 48 2/5 eight days later on
November 29.
Bred by Joseph and Alfred Nastasi of Saratoga
Springs, Seeyoubychance is by now-deceased former
New York stallion American Chance, who had stood
at Kurt Butenhoff's and James Lamonica's Empire
Stud, LLC in Hudson but had died in October --
presumably from colic -- after shuttling to Argentina.
Progeny from the first of three New York-conceived
crops sired by American Chance, who was a multiple
Grade 2-winning son of New York record-setting
sire Cure the Blues, are current yearlings. Seeyoubychance
is the first offspring produced from Gypsy Swap,
a Woodman mare that the Nastasis had purchased
for $25,000 at Keeneland's 2002 January mixed
sale in Lexington, Kentucky when she was carrying
Seeyoubychance. Gypsy Swap's dam, Promenade Colony,
is a winning daughter of Pleasant Colony and a
full sister to multiple Grade 2-winning filly
Dance Colony ($504,825) -- as well as a half-sister
to Grade 1 winners Another Review ($752,370) and
No Review ($634,545).
Seeyoubychance is the 32nd registered New York-bred
winner of an open (to horses bred anywhere) stakes
in 2004 and the sixth New York-bred open juvenile
stakes winner this year, with his black-type tally
coming just 13 days after New York-bred two-year-old
filly Megascape had captured Aqueduct's Grade
3 Valley Stream. The H. Steward Mitchell was the
38th open stakes event of the year won by a runner
registered with the New York Breeding and Racing
Program. Those 38 open stakes victories have been
scored in ten U.S. states and four countries on
two continents. For all of 2003, a total of 20
New York-breds won 23 open stakes events.

SEEYOUBYCHANCE
broke outward, moved closer three to four
wide mid turn, rallied to a short lead in
mid stretch, dueled and prevailed in an
extended drive. MONSTER CHASER settled early,
advanced between rivals mid turn, awaited
room entering the lane, angled out nearing
the furlong marker and closed gamely. LATE
NIGHT LOVER , away alertly, set a pressured
pace two wide, drifted three wide entering
the lane, was headed in mid stretch, dueled
inside of the winner and continued gamely.
MALIBU MOONSHINE , sluggish at the break,
angled out mid turn, rallied five wide leaving
the eighth pole, loomed boldly then flattened
out. RADICAL BANKER broke a step slow, saved
ground, was put to urging on the turn and
continued willingly. KARBOBWAY prompted
the pace three wide, was floated four wide
into the lane and tired. |
